| Web sites where you can find letterbox clues: Letterboxes that we hid: Huh? What's a Letterbox?Letterboxing isn't just for watching movies on your TV. It's a fun hobby that you can play with people all over the world. It's like treasure hunting meets folk art and creative writing. A letterbox is......a container that has a rubber stamp and a logbook inside. ...usually a box, but also can be a bag. A lot of times a letterbox also contains an ink pad and a pen. And what do you do with a letterbox?Well, the person who makes the letterbox, hides it somewhere. Then that person writes and publishes a clue so that other people may find the letterbox. Often clues are pretty straighforward, but sometimes they are written creatively, like a story or a poem. Letterbox hunters usually bring with them their own stamp and log book. When a letterbox hunter finds a letterbox, he or she takes her own stamp and makes a mark in the letterbox's log book. Then the letterbox hunter will use the letterbox's stamp to make a mark in his or her own log book. Um, so why is it called a "letterbox"?The origin of letterboxing dates back to the 1850's in Dartmoor, England. The first letterbox was set up by James Perrott at Cranmere Pool in North Dartmoor. In it, a hiker could leave a self-addressed letter or a post card, intended to be picked up and mailed by the next hiker to find it.
